In this session, students will be guided through developing an interactive and dynamic website by using the Django framework. We will briefly touch on the history of Django and the philosophy of the project. Then, we will install Django through Python and pip. We will then go over the basics of setting up a project, creating a basic Django “app,” review our knowledge of objects and classes in Python, and then discuss the concept behind relational databases.
Teaching and Learning with the iPad

This session focuses on the latest research about how iPads can be used in the classroom. We will cover use cases from institutions across the country, academic content and iTunes U, digital textbook resources from iBook and Inkling, projecting with VGA adapters and document cameras, polling students and colleagues with the free app Socrative, and presenting from iPad with keynote or Prezi. There are no prerequisites for this session; it is a demo based presentation and is not hands-on. However, participants who have iPads are welcome to bring them to follow along.

In Part II of this series we will start covering the Model API, how to write the admin views, how to write client-side views, and the QuerySet API. Learn how to build a desktop eye tracking station using off-the-shelf components and open source software. In this demonstration and discussion, Jeff Kuhn will show how to create an eye tracking station for under $150 using a basic webcam and infrared lights. No engineering or advanced computer skills are needed. Jeff will discuss how he used his custom eye tracking station in linguistic research on ESL error noticing. This interactive session will also include a discussion on the successes and difficulties in using a home-built eye tracker for research projects.

Intrigued by the idea of game-based learning, Rebecca Garabed removed an essay project from her introductory epidemiology course and replaced it with a game to teach veterinary students about outbreak investigation. In this first foray into game-based learning, she encountered unexpected challenges and feedback and learned some valuable lessons. She will present the good and the bad of this experience as a case study and discussion to help other instructors who are thinking of using games in their courses.

Join Ken Petri from the Web Accessibility Center for a demonstration covering a range of simple techniques to create and present captioned video. After a brief introduction to video captioning and an overview of its benefits, we will explore ways to get an accurate transcription and create the synchronized caption track. You will learn how to present captioned video to your users in various ways including iTunes and on the web, via YouTube, and in web page-embedded players.

If you are looking for tips and best practices for managing your email in Outlook efficiently, join Henry Griffy from Learning Technologies Grant Support for this demonstration. Henry will review built-in tools Outlook 2010 for managing e-mail (search, folders, categories, flags, etc.). Then, he'll discuss ways to combine these tools into time-saving organizational strategies. A simple model and a fancy model will be explored.

Using styles in Word will allow you to format your documents in a fast, efficient, and consistent way, and in a way that can be your very own. This workshop will explore styles in MS Word. You'll see what they are, how they work for you, and how you can use them to save time and create attractive documents. Styles can do all the repetitive work for you when you need to apply formatting to your headings and text. Styles will give the reader “signposts” that encourage usability of your document.
