The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) offers the following software programs to members of the Ohio State University community. Information specific to each platform is listed. Please refer to Site Licensed Software Program for more information about how to obtain the software or to the Software Life-cycle Management Guidelines for general policy guidelines and an explanation of certain restrictions that may apply to usage on regional campuses.

NOTE: There is a Listserve email distribution list called SLICNEWS. This Listserve list is for announcements of all new OCIO Site Licensed and volume purchase product releases and new products and for inquiries. You can also view recent product announcements from the OCIO Community News Blog. Both services provide you with information; however, the SLICNEWS Listserve provides you with notices in your email with no further action on your part.

Gaussian is a program for computational chemistry. It uses electronic structure modeling to investigate chemical phenomena. It is available to faculty, staff and for classroom use. Home use is not allowed. It is available only for main campus. The right-to-use license is no charge. Faculty and staff will sign an End User Agreement which also contains a Confidentiality Agreement, which OCIO will forward to Gaussian, Inc. IT support staff are able to deploy copies to student labs but are not authorized to make distribution to any other faculty/staff. Each faculty/staff user must obtain their own copy from OIT after signing their own agreement. Students in labs are authorized to use the software only for projects and assignments for courses in which they are currently enrolled. Each student must sign a departmental computing policies form to use the software. The media may be loaned out at the IT Service Desk (025 Central Classrooms) for 3 working days for installation. Software is distributed in the IT Service Desk. CDROM only.

 McAfee VirusScan (ver. 5.2):

System Requirements:

  • HP-UX 11.0, 11i and 11iv2 for PA-RISC with latest patches.
  • 10 MB hard disk space.
  • 128 MB RAM.

This is a desktop program for detecting and removing computer viruses. It allows you to scan your hard drives, memory and diskettes to find viruses and repair infected files. This license was obtained by OIT. Available to faculty and staff for main and regional campus use and home use. This is a right-to-use license and software must be returned to your department or OIT and deleted from your computer when you leave OSU. This product is obtained via electronic download (see below). Licenses are owned by OSU. Department computer support persons may install on multiple machines; however, they must insure that users receiving a copy get a copy of the Mcafee License agreement and you provide OIT with the names of those to whom you have subdistributed.

This is a right-to-use license and software must be left with your department when you leave OSU. This product is distributed electronically via a limited-access FTP site maintained by McAfee at:

Note: Access to the McAfee Enterprise download pages requires a Grant Number. This download site is intended for use by department computing support staff. Please contact software@osu.edu or 614-688-HELP to register your department and obtain the Grant Number.

 Oracle Database Software:

System Requirements:

OCIO has purchased a campuswide site license for the following Oracle software modules:

  • Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition
  • Oracle Diagnostics Pack
  • Oracle Tuning Pack

This is available to faculty, staff and students on main and regional campuses for administrative, teaching, research, or community service functions. Commercial use is prohibited. It may not be used on your home computer or for personal use. It is not available for use in the OSU Medical Center for non-medical functions such as patient management and billing. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department or OIT when you leave OSU. You will order software CDs directly from an Oracle MetaLink web site. For authorization to access this site to order CDs you will need OSU's Oracle Customer Support Identifier (CSI). A file containing this number and additional instructions, the Oracle CSI file, can be downloaded from OSU Software Downloads.

 RefWorks (current release):

System Requirements:

  • Browser, Netscape 6.0 or later recommended.
  • Word processor capable of saving documents in .rtf format.

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography. RefWorks is a web-based application and hence is available to users on Windows, Macintosh and Unix, etc. No downloading or installation is needed since you use your web browser to access this application from a server. RefWorks has been acquired through the efforts of The Ohio State University Libraries in conjunction with other OhioLink member schools. OIT site licensing provides some cost sharing in support of this campuswide license. This application is available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses. To access the RefWorks web-based application, proceed to the OSU Libraries Research Databases web site.

Platform: IBM AIX

  • IBM eServer pSeries (RS6000) Power 4 or Power 5 (64 bit).
  • AIX 5.1 or later.
  • 600 MB hard disk space, 256 MB RAM.

 Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client (version 2.4) Linux:

System Requirements:

  • PC or compatible.
  • Red Hat Linux 5, Ubuntu 9.x, or compatible libraries with glibc version 2.1.1-6 or later, kernel version 2.2.12 or later.
  • 64 MB RAM, 50 MB free disk space.

OSUnet VPN service is designed as a solution for faculty, staff and students to be able to have remote usage to the OSUnet network that is authenticated and secure. This authentication is accomplished by a "client" VPN program which communicates with a server located at OSU. Available to faculty, staff and students at main and regional campuses and on your home computer. It is for university-related business only and must be left with your department and removed from your home computer when you leave OSU. This is distributed electronically only.  Gaussian 03 Revision E.01 (Linux, IRIX):

System Requirements:

    Ubuntu 8.04; 512 MB RAM, 650 MB hard disk, X11 R6.
  • 64-bit : RedHat Enterprise 5.0; SuSe Enterprise 10, 11; Ubuntu 8.04;
    512 MB RAM, 650 MB hard disk space, X11 R6.

A powerful and comprehensive symbolic algebra system used for engineering and mathematical instruction and research. Available to faculty and staff for use on computers on campus or in their homes for university-related business. Available to students who are employed as teaching or research assistants/associates for use on computers on campus only for university-related business. Software must be returned when leaving OSU. Maple contains extensive Help after installation. Software is available for download in the following versions:

GRA/GTA students seeking use of this software should request the download from their advisor or another faculty/staff member in their department.

NOTE: you can access the Maple Application Center. This site offers a free online resource of technical solutions submitted by Maple users from around the world. When you link to this site, you also have access to the Maple Student Center for course help, Maple Power Tools which are add-on packages and The Maple Reporter which is published semiannually and covers new developments at Waterloo Maple, Inc.

Student use is limited to use in meeting classroom requirements and courses of study offered by OSU. Commercial use is prohibited. Additional toolboxes may be ordered. In this case The Mathworks will generate any additional license codes for add-on toolboxes (Child Licenses) for you to combine during installation with your Standard Configuration license codes. The MATLAB TAH Install Guide provides details on how to install additional toolbox licenses NOT in the OSU Standard Configuration along with the TAH license for the Standard OSU license configuration.  Mathematica Faculty/Staff Edition (version 7.01):

System Requirements:

  • PC with a Pentium 3 processor or equivalent.
  • 2.4 Linux kernel or later. On newer Linux distributions, additional compatibility libraries may need to be installed.
  • 512 MB of RAM, 3 GB of hard disk space.

This is a technical computing system used by science, industry and academia. It combines high-precision numeric and symbolic computation with data visualization and programming capabilities. This license was obtained by the College of Math and Physical Sciences. This version is licensed to currently employed faculty and staff. This software may be used on OSU-owned machines or personal machines in support of instruction of academic research. Research laboratories are not eligible unless their primary mission is the direct teaching of students. The software is licensed annually at no charge, currently. The license runs from September to September of each year. It is available electronically only. To receive a download and receive instructions to license Mathematica, click Software Downloads.

 Mathematica Student Edition (version 7.0):

System Requirements:

  • PC with a Pentium 3 processor or equivalent.
  • 2.4 Linux kernel or later. On newer Linux distributions, additional compatibility libraries may need to be installed.

 SAS (Version 9.1.3): Linux:

System Requirements:

  • Pentium II or above.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 with SP 1.
  • 64 MB RAM; 8 MB additional each concurrent user.
  • 1.3 GB hard disk space for the entire system and all optional files.
  • Netscape Communicator Rel. 6.2.3 or higher.

The following products are included: Base, AF, ASSIST, CONNECT, EIS, ETS, FSP, GIS, GRAPH, IML, INSIGHT, OR, LAB, QC, SECURE, SHARE, SPECTRAVIEW, STAT, ACCESS Interface to: ORACLE, SYBASE, DB2, MySQL and INFORMIX databases. The right to use license may be purchased at the IT Service Desk (025 Central Classrooms) with an eRequest. The server version is available to faculty and staff for use on OSU owned machines located on campus for academic instruction, research and administrative use OR for administrative use and must be returned when you leave OSU. You must state your intended use. SAS Server is available on a per-processor basis. A CPU processor is a single integrated circuit on the motherboard with one or more cores. So, a dual core CPU counts as one CPU. The cost per CPU processor is $317. This software is renewable annually each August for a fee. The software is provided on CD-ROM which may be borrowed for three working days from the IT Service Desk. If you are updating to this new version and have already paid for the current year, you will need only to provide identification at the IT Service Desk to borrow the software.

 STATA (version 10) Linux:

System Requirements:

  • PC with Pentium class processor.
  • Only 32-bit version offered on Grad Plan.
  • X Windows.
  • 512 MB of RAM; 80 MB free hard disk space.

STATA is an environment for manipulating and analyzing data using statistical and graphical methods. It is an integrated package, not a collection of separate modules. This is available as part of the STATA Corp. Grad Plan, originally administered by the Statistics dept. OIT is now distributing this at their request. Available to faculty, staff, and students on main and regional campuses and on home computers. If you purchase with your own funds you own the software license. Licenses purchased with OSU funds remain with OSU. To purchase, call 800-782-8272 or go to the STATA site. Once you have ordered the software, your order should normally be available for pickup at the IT Service Desk, 025 Central Classrooms, the next business day (notification is sent to users via e-mail when the software is available). The software comes boxed from STATA Corp. All materials you have ordered are in the distribution.

 VMWare:

Through an agreement with OARNet, VMWare is now available at substantial discounts from market cost. Among the products offered are: View Enterprise, View Premier Add-on, ESX Enterprise, Lifecycle Manager, Site Recovery Manager, Mgmt. & Auto. Bundle, Lab Manager, Stage Manager, VirtualCenter, ThinApp Suite, ThinApp Client, Fusion, Fusion Support Pack, Workstation. Please see the OARNet website for ordering instructions and forms. Once reviewed by an OARnet Client Service Representative, your order will be forwarded to VMware representatives, who then will provide you with download instructions and a product key. Once the orders and downloads have been completed, VMware (1-877-486-9273 or vmware-higher-education@oar.net) will be directly responsible for providing you with product support.
