Software Directory for Sun Computers

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) offers the following software programs to members of The Ohio State University community. We have attempted to give an explanation of the agreement where applicable. Please refer to Site Licensed Software Program for more information about how to obtain the software or to the Software Life-cycle Management Guidelines for general policy guidelines and an explanation of certain restrictions that may apply to usage on regional campuses.
NOTICE: The IT Service Desk can only accept eRequest's for departmental sales (faculty and staff only).

Gaussian 03 Revision E.01:
System Requirements:
- Sun UltraSPARC.
- Solaris 9 or 10.
- 600 MB hard disk space, 256 MB RAM.
Gaussian is a program for computational chemistry. It uses electronic structure modeling to investigate chemical phenomena. It is available to faculty, staff and for classroom use. Home use is not allowed. It is available only for main campus. The right-to-use license is no charge. Faculty and staff will sign an End User Agreement which also contains a Confidentiality Agreement, which OCIO will forward to Gaussian, Inc. IT support staff are able to deploy copies to student labs but are not authorized to make distribution to any other faculty/staff. Each faculty/staff user must obtain their own copy from OIT after signing their own agreement. Students in labs are authorized to use the software only for projects and assignments for courses in which they are currently enrolled. Each student must sign a departmental computing policies form to use the software. The media may be loaned out at the IT Service Desk (025 Central Classrooms) for 3 working days for installation. Software is distributed at the IT Service Desk. CDROM only.
MATLAB 2009b (version 7.9) :
System Requirements::
- Sun UltraSPARC
- Solaris 10 and higher.
- 1024 MB of Ram, 725 MB of hard disk space for MATLAB only and the online Help files.
- Access to both the C++ and FORTRAN compilers if building MEX files.
- See http://www.mathworks.com/support/sysreq/current_release/unix.html for supported compilers.
- X Windows X11R6.
- This is the last supported release for Solaris The vendor has discontinued all Solaris support.
MATLAB is a part of Mathworks R2009b and is an interactive environment for numeric computation that specializes in working with matrices. It combines a powerful user interface with 2-D and 3-D graphics and a comprehensive library of mathematical analysis techniques. This product comes in two versions:

Available to faculty and academic staff for teaching and research on OSU owned or controlled computers and campus computer labs. It is also available to faculty, academic staff and students for use on personally owned computers. Student use is limited to use in meeting classroom requirements and courses of study offered by OSU. Commercial use is prohibited.
Instructions for download may be obtained from the following two links. Understand that you will need to search for "previous releases" during the download to obtain a Solaris option, and that The MathWorks may remove this option at any time:
McAfee VirusScan (ver. 5.2):
System Requirements:
- Solaris 8 or higher (32 and 64-bit).
- 10 MB hard disk space.
- 128 MB RAM.
This is a desktop program for detecting and removing computer viruses. It allows you to scan your hard drives, memory and diskettes to find viruses and repair infected files. This license was obtained by OIT. Available to faculty and staff for main and regional campus use and home use. This is a right-to-use license and software must be returned to your department or OIT and deleted from your computer when you leave OSU. This product is obtained via electronic download (see below). Licenses are owned by OSU. Department computer support persons may install on multiple machines; however, they must insure that users receiving a copy get a copy of the McAfee License agreement and you provide OCIO with the names of those to whom you have subdistributed.
This is a right-to-use license and software must be left with your department when you leave OSU. This product is distributed electronically via a limited-access FTP site maintained by McAfee at:

Click on "My Products" under Enterprise Downloads (see Note). This will take you to current downloads of all of these products. Look for Command Line Scanners.
Review a copy of the McAfee License Agreement before you download the software.
Note: Access to the McAfee Enterprise download pages requires a Grant Number. This download site is intended for use by department computing support staff. Please contact software@osu.edu or 614-688-HELP to register your department and obtain the Grant Number.
Oracle Database Software:

The Office of Information Technology has purchased a campuswide site license for the following Oracle software modules:
- Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition
- Oracle Diagnostics Pack
- Oracle Tuning Pack
This is available to faculty, staff and students on main and regional campuses for administrative, teaching, research, or community service functions. Commercial use is prohibited. It may not be used on your home computer or for personal use. It is not available for use in the OSU Medical Center for non-medical functions such as patient management and billing. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department or OIT when you leave OSU. You will order software CDs directly from an Oracle MetaLink web site. For authorization to access this site to order CDs you will need OSU's Oracle Customer Support Identifier (CSI). A file containing this number and additional instructions, the Oracle CSI file, can be downloaded from OSU Software Downloads.
RefWorks (current release):
System Requirements:
- Browser, Netscape 6.0 or later recommended.
- Word processor capable of saving documents in .rtf format.
RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography. RefWorks is a web-based application and hence is available to users on Windows, Macintosh and Unix, etc. No downloading or installation is needed since you use your web browser to access this application from a server. RefWorks has been acquired through the efforts of The Ohio State University Libraries in conjunction with other OhioLink member schools. OIT site licensing provides some cost sharing in support of this campuswide license. This application is available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses. To access the RefWorks web-based application, proceed to the OSU Libraries Research Databases web site.
SAS (Version 9.1.3) Solaris 8 or later:
System Requirements:
- 96 MB RAM each concurrent user.
- 1.3 GB hard disk space for the entire system and all optional files.
- Netscape Communicator Rel. 6.2.3 or higher.
The following products are included: Base, AF, ASSIST, CONNECT, EIS, ETS, FSP, GIS, GRAPH, IML, INSIGHT, OR, LAB, QC, SECURE, SHARE, SPECTRAVIEW, STAT, ACCESS Interface to: ORACLE, SYBASE, DB2, MySQL and INFORMIX databases. The right to use license may be purchased at the IT Service Desk (025 Central Classrooms) with an eRequest. The server version is available to faculty and staff for use on OSU owned machines located on campus for academic instruction, research and administrative use OR for administrative use and must be returned when you leave OSU. You must state your intended use. SAS Server is available on a per-processor basis. A CPU processor is a single integrated circuit on the motherboard with one or more cores. So, a dual core CPU counts as one CPU. The cost per CPU processor is $350. This software is renewable annually each August for a fee. The software is provided on CD-ROM which may be borrowed for three working days from the IT Service Desk. If you are updating to this new version and have already paid for the current year, you will need only to provide identification at the IT Service Desk to borrow the software.

Through an agreement with OARNet, VMWare is now available at substantial discounts from market cost. Among the products offered are: View Enterprise, View Premier Add-on, ESX Enterprise, Lifecycle Manager, Site Recovery Manager, Mgmt. & Auto. Bundle, Lab Manager, Stage Manager, VirtualCenter, ThinApp Suite, ThinApp Client, Fusion, Fusion Support Pack, Workstation. Please see the OARNet website for ordering instructions and forms. Once reviewed by an OARnet Client Service Representative, your order will be forwarded to VMware representatives, who then will provide you with download instructions and a product key. Once the orders and downloads have been completed, VMware (1-877-486-9273 or vmware-higher-education@oar.net) will be directly responsible for providing you with product support.
