UNITS Director Gregory J. Ashe has accepted a position with CIGNA Health Care Corporation, effective March 1. Ashe has been with UNITS for the past 12 years and been the director since 1992. He will head CIGNA's Midwest Claims and Inquiries Center in Columbus.
He led UNITS through numerous technological changes and service additions, elevating it from a simple telephone system to an integrated telecommunications provider of voice, video and data services. New services included expanded long distance, local area networks, dial-up Internet service, cable television, video conferencing and most recently, university-owned payphones. He was also instrumental in saving the university significant dollars by implementing key rate reductions over the years.
"I feel confident in leaving at this time based on the department's present financial stability and plans for continued expansion," Ashe said. "This, combined with the fact that I am leaving behind very talented leadership, will continue to move the department in the right direction."
Chief Information Officer Ilee Rhimes, Jr. named Bob Corbin as the department's interim director. Corbin has been assistant director since 1997 and with UNITS for the past 15 years. Rhimes said, "We appreciate the dedication and leadership that Greg provided during his tenure. He will be missed. However, he is leaving a UNITS management team in place that will be able to continue to move forward."
