Ohio State's innovative Digital Union is among the case studies in a new e-Book from EDUCAUSE titled Learning Spaces. The publication is edited by Diane Oblinger, EDUCAUSE vice president and director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative.

The e-Book presents a comprehensive rethinking of learning spaces by examining, among many topics, student practices, the psychology of learning environments, and trends in learning design. It also looks ahead in the chapter “Seriously Cool Places: The Future of Learning-Centered Built Environments.”

The chapter on the Digital Union was written by Ohio State faculty/staff members Victoria Getis, interim director of the Digital Union; Catherine Gynn, CIO at Newark Campus and Central Ohio Technical College; and Susan E. Metros, deputy CIO, executive director for eLearning, and a professor of design technology. The authors extensively cover the intent, guiding principles, design, technologies, equipment, and activities of the laboratory. The information they present, along with the entire book on learning spaces, should appeal to faculty, students, and staff who want to know more about the inventive approaches to teaching and learning being devised and applied by notable institutions.

Among the case studies detailed in the book are laboratories, libraries, and projects at Denison, Duke, and Iowa State universities, London School of Economics, MIT, Eckerd College, and Estrella Mountain Community College.

Learning Spaces is available free on the EDUCAUSE web site. The book may be downloaded in pdf form either entirely or by individual chapters.
