University Removes SSNs from Grade Upload Process, Transcripts, and Class Rosters

Article originally published in a different format

The Office of the CIO and the University Registrar removed students' Social Security numbers from transcript reports and class rosters just before autumn quarter. Those with access to BuckeyeLink will notice that the students' SSN on class rosters are replaced by the student's lastname.#. The SSN column was removed from the grade upload display as well.

Old advising reports and class rosters containing student SSN information should be properly destroyed or stored on a secured or encrypted device to prevent potential data exposure. Transcripts and transcript reports replace the SSN with the last 11 characters of the lastname.#. Individuals are still required to provide their SSN when requesting a transcript.

More information about the changes to the various reports as well as other steps being taken to reduce or protect SSN information here at The Ohio State University can be found at BuckeyeSecure.
