Education and Human Ecology Unveils New Ramseyer Learning Space

In late April, the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) completed an extensive renovation in Ramseyer Hall to create the College Commons. The space that began as the gym in the 1920s for the University Laboratory School and most recently was the Edgar Dale Media Center and children’s literature library is now an open and inviting technology-enabled learning space.

Driving the project was an ambitious vision to create a modern, flexible teaching and learning environment that could also comfortably host a full assembly of EHE faculty.

EHE Dean Cheryl Achterberg explains, "As I toured the college, I saw the need for a space where students, faculty and staff could meet, work and create. I'm thrilled with the final result, the College Commons in Ramseyer Hall, which brings the Edgar Dale Media Center into the 21st century.”

Available by reservation for the Ohio State community, the Commons’ technology highlights include:

  • MediaScape unit
  • EarthWalk Project 8 collaboration table
  • SMART Board interactive
  • Professional media and sound recording studio with podcast capabilities
  • Multimedia and video production with teleprompter options
  • Vidyo personal teleprescence system
  • Configurable as four distinct breakout areas or combined as needed for over 200 people

The College Commons provides open and inviting learning spaces.

During planning, the EHE team talked to OCIO Learning Technology experts from the Digital Union to leverage local experience in designing and managing innovative learning spaces on campus.

Victoria Getis, director of the Digital Union, advised that EHE include an area that mirrors what future teachers will find when they walk into K-12 classrooms in Ohio.

Getis says, “We suggested a section of the College Commons be set up like a classroom with a SMART Board, since these are pretty common, to give EHE’s teacher preparation students experience with the technology before they are confronted with them in front of 30 rambunctious fifth graders."

EHE CIO Micheal Carroll says, "After nearly nine months of planning, preparation and implementation, I am really proud of what we've accomplished. It's a demonstration of how much stronger we can be when we work cohesively to create a vision and work towards its achievement.“

The College Commons is configurable and can host up to 200 people.

To reserve space in the College Commons, contact Jennifer Longo at the EHE Service Desk at 247-8324 or An EHE associate will work with you to assess your needs and suggest an appropriate space. In keeping with the space’s open aesthetic, placing a reservation does not "close-out" adjacent spaces.
