Updated Software: MathWorks MATLAB 2011b for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Software: MathWorks MATLAB 2011b for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Description: Yesterday, The MathWorks released version 2011b of its MATLAB software, which the Office of the CIO, the College of Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences, and OSC have licensed campus-wide for faculty, staff, and students. As a result of distribution changes in January of 2011, you no longer need to go to or contact the IT Service Desk to request an upgrade: all faculty, staff, and students should be able to download the most recent version of the software directly from The MathWorks, or download the newest version immediately.

If you are unable to download the newest version from your MathWorks account, you may need to retrieve an updated Authorization Key from OSU SLS (see below); OCIO has renewed the MATLAB license for the campus.

Platform: Windows 32- and 64-bit operating systems; MacOS X 64-bit operating systems; Linux 32- and 64-bit operating systems

System Requirements:

  • Windows: XP sp3/2003 R2/Vista sp2/2008 R2/7, Intel/AMD x86 processor, 1 GB disk space, 1 GB RAM;
  • Mac: MacOS X 10.6.4 or higher with Apple Java for MacOS X Update 2 or above, Intel-based macs with an Intel Core2 or higher, 1 GB disk space, 1 GB RAM;
  • Linux: Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, RedHat 5.x and 6.x, Suse Desktop 11.x, Debian 5.x, Intel or AMD x86 processor, 1 GB disk space, 1 GB RAM.

Updating Your Current Software: The easiest way to update your installation of MATLAB is to open your currently-licensed copy while connected to the Internet and go to

Help => Check for Updates

The software will automatically check for updates to all toolboxes and programs. You will be presented with two views when it returns a result:

“View new product versions for my current release”

“View most current product versions”

Select “View most current product versions” to see updates to the new release, 2011b. From there, you can select “Download Products at MathWorks.Com.” This will open your browser and may prompt you to log into their site (if you have forgotten your username and password, the username should be your @osu.edu account and a password you chose in order to register your MathWorks product; there is a “forgot password” option available).

You may be prompted to update your Java plugins at this time, if they are out of date. You should have Java installed to download the updates.

On the next screen, choose to update to the current version (2011b), select your platform (e.g. Windows 32-bit, MacOS X, etc.), and choose whether to update all your products or just some of them.

The download and installation process will follow the same process used to download and install your current version.

If you require the activation key for the software, it is available in the download from OSU SLS (see “New Users” below), and may also be requested from the IT Service Desk at 8help@osu.edu.

New Users/Users Not Yet Renewed: To download and install the software, go to OSU SLS (http://osusls.osu.edu/),  select the tab that corresponds to your platform, and find “MATLAB” on the list of downloads. This will lead you to an instructional PDF file that will walk you through the process of authorizing yourself to download the software, and downloading and installing it. This PDF file includes the most recent renewal Authorization Key as well as these instructions.
