BuckeyeBox Updates for November 2014

To be released in the coming weeks:

Please find the weekly Box product news update below, which includes features expected to go live in the coming weeks. For information on recently-released features and product changes, visit https://cloud.box.com/recentfeatures

Change in Sync Behavior

We will change Box Sync's behavior with deletions this week. Currently, all synced folders that are deleted locally are unsynced on the Box web application. Based on customer feedback, we will change this behavior for both personal and collaborative folders. If a user deletes a synced personal folder locally, that folder will delete both from their local system and on the Box web application. If a user attempts to delete a collaborative folder, they will receive a warning message that the folder will delete for all collaborators and choose to either confirm the deletion or unsync instead. Please review our documentation.

Box for iOS v3.5

We released the latest version of Box for iPhone and iPad. Box for iOS v3.5 introduces new ways to access your most important content and ensures collaboration continuity, so you can stay productive no matter where you’re working or what device you’re on. We’ve rolled out several significant new features that take advantage of functionality built on iOS 8 including a “Today Extensions” widget, Favorites, and the ability to unlock your Box app with Touch ID. For further exploration, please see our Help Center documentation and blog post.

Favorites in the Web Application

Over the next week, we'll roll out the ability to favorite your folders and files in the Box web application. This functionality works across the web application and mobile devices, so the folders and files you favorite will appear cross-platform. To learn more about this new functionality, please see our Help Center documentation and blog post.

Redesigned Notifications Page and Header in the Web Application

Over the next week, we'll roll out the new Notifications page. It will be a more fully functional inbox where users can access pending tasks, comments, folder invites, and general collaboration updates. We will also move the header's search bar to the left-hand navigation and the icons for the Notifications, Updates, and Files pages to the right-hand navigation. For reference, here is our Help Center documentation and blog post.

Redesigned Collaborators Page in the Web Application

As part of our larger web application UI redesign, we will also update the Collaborators page over the next week. This update does not include any new functionality beyond making the table layout column sortable. The "remove collaborator" action will move from a right-click menu option to an in-line button, and the "send message" action can be triggered by selecting the collaborator's email address. The ability to invite a collaborator to a folder will only be available at the folder-level page.

Coming soon:

New languages on the Box Web Application

Next week our Web application will support Danish and Norwegian. Danish and Norwegian are already supported on Box for Windows 8, and will be available on all mobile products in the following weeks.

Change to Office PowerPoint in Box Preview

Over the coming weeks, we will change how we convert and preview Office document file types. We have done this to improve overall conversion quality and speed. As part of this change, users will lose the ability to click on hyperlinks in PowerPoint files in Box preview on the Web application, m.box, and mobile applications. We hope to restore this functionality in the future.

Upcoming Feature and Browser End of Life (EOL)

Throughout the coming quarters, we will remove some functionality to make room for an even better product. Below are the upcoming EOLs for this current quarter. Please review additional information on the Box support site here

  • Wordpress widget
    • As of December 1, 2014, we will end support for the creation of new Wordpress widgets. At this time, the Wordpress widget EOL will only stop the creation of new Wordpress widgets and not affect existing widget functionality.
    • As of January 5, 2015, we will officially end all support for the Wordpress widget, including the ability to upload. You will need to fully transition to Box Embed for the same functionality.
    • We encourage you to use Box Embed to embed files and folders from your account page onto any website, blog, or social networking service that supports HTML iframe embed code. To learn more, see our Box Embed article.
  • Webdocs

Moving forward, Box will support the current and prior major releases of the following web browsers, and desktop and mobile operating system versions on a rolling basis. Additional information is available here.
