Deployment of Internet Explorer 11 begins 1/4/16

This message is being shared with the Ohio State administrative system user community and the technical community that supports them.

As of mid-January 2016, Microsoft will no longer support versions of the Internet Explorer Web browser older than IE11. The older versions will not cease to function, but they will no longer be patched or updated by Microsoft, thus making IE7, IE8 and IE9 unfit for use. OCIO desktop support will begin push-out of IE11 on Monday, January 4, 2016.

To ease the phase-out of the unsupported browsers, the OCIO online recommended browser page has been updated to help local IT support as they transition their users to IE11 or alternate browsers.

Affects on key Ohio State enterprise systems:

While the list below is not all-inclusive, it does highlight how to move forward with key systems that were once dependent on older versions of the IE browser:

  • Financials System and eMaterials (Wexner Medical Center)
    • IE11 has been tested with no known issues
  • eReports
  • eStores
    • A few changes to the IE11 setup are needed to allow IE11 to work with eStores. Use the following eStores browser setup information or select an alternate browser when using eStores.

Technical details for people who provide desktop support:

Additionally, Microsoft has added a new feature to IE11 that allows it to emulate IE7 or IE8. This feature is called Enterprise Mode and uses an XML file to store a list of sites where emulation of IE7 or IE8 is necessary along with a flag for each site indicating which browser it should emulate. You can enable Enterprise Mode for a given user or all users on a machine using the Group Policy Editor.
