The OCIO’s Digital Union regularly holds workshops and events on Carmen, digital media tools, online learning and more. The Digital Union can also arrange a special workshop or consultation for departments and colleges or groups of 10 or more upon request. For the current workshop schedule, registration, a link to online Carmen video tutorials, and details about requesting a custom Carmen workshop, please see the Digital Union event page at ocio.osu.edu/calendar.
The Digital Union recognized a need for anytime/anywhere Carmen training for instructors and have created a new series of Carmen video tutorials based on the topics covered in their core face-to-face workshops. These tutorials can be accessed from an Internet connection anytime you need them.
The complete set of videos is available at elearning.osu.edu/carmen-help/instructors/video_guide.htm. The Digital Union will continue to add to their list of topics as there is an interest.
At the end of Winter 2011, the Carmen team deployed a major update to the process for transferring grades from Carmen to the Registrar’s Faculty Center. Some minor adjustments were made in spring.
Now that grades for Spring 2011 have all been completed, we’re pleased to document that Final Grades v3 has been an improvement. Our logs show that grade transfer errors were appreciably lower in Winter and Spring 2011 than they were for the same two quarters in 2010.
OCIO’s team members, with input from the eLearning Strategic Implementation Committee, OCIO Advisory Community, and several colleges and departments, are developing a university-wide eLearning Inventory. When completed, this resource will be a searchable and sortable web site where people can find out what eLearning tools are in use at Ohio State. All units – campuses, colleges, departments, and other organizations – that provide eLearning tools for their instructional staff will be invited to contribute to and use this shared resource.
The Office of the Chief Information Officer recently launched a major update to Carmen, Ohio State’s online learning management system. The update, which expands on OCIO's Year of eLearning efforts, includes significantly redesigned user tools, which presents a great opportunity for instructors to learn more about these new and enhanced tools and broaden their use of Carmen.
Expanding on the OCIO's Year of eLearning efforts, the planned update to Carmen in late December will bring a number of positive changes to the learning management system.
In conjunction with Ohio State's Year of eLearning, Carmen, OSU’s learning management system, will be updated after the end of autumn quarter 2010. OCIO staff are working now to ensure that Carmen will continue to integrate smoothly with other OSU systems and that faculty and staff have opportunities to explore the updated system.
Prior to the beginning of autumn quarter, the Carmen support team provided a brief outline of recent and upcoming Carmen news. Topics included:
CarmenWiki, a service of Learning Technology in the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO), has made its transition from extended pilot to production mode. After being informally available for two years, CarmenWiki is now an official service of the university. Steadily increasing use of CarmenWiki by Ohio State students, faculty and staff convinced the Learning Technology team to take the final steps to make the service more easily available and to provide a larger support structure.
A limited number of seats are still available for a special series of Carmen workshops being held on Tuesday (8/3) and Thursday (8/5) at the Digital Union, 390 Science and Engineering Library.
