The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) offers the following Macintosh site-licensed and public domain software programs to members of The Ohio State University community.

Adobe Acrobat Professional:

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff departmental use via IT Service Desk; Student and fac/staff personal use available via WiredOut.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro software lets you deliver highly professional PDF communications. Create and edit PDF files with rich media included, share information more securely, and gather team feedback more efficiently.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has reached an agreement with Adobe to provide unlimited use of the Acrobat Professional product on all OSU campuses for faculty and staff. This Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) permits a broad installation of the software, and allows us to deepen our relationship with Adobe. Available to faculty, staff, and GRA/GTA's, this software may be used on OSU-owned machines, or on home machines for University business. Available on main and regional campuses and all extension offices.

 Adobe Contract License Program:

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff departmental use via CLP (see below); Student and fac/staff personal use available via WiredOut.

Ohio State University has entered into a Contract License Program (CLP) with Adobe. This contract provides for discounts up to 65% off of educational boxed product. This software may be obtained at WiredOut, in the Central Classrooms building. Personal use for faculty, staff, and students may be obtained at WiredOut, also at significant discount. Site License Coordinators may obtain installation codes for departmental use. SLSC's may request the codes for all Adobe products through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Adobe Reader (current version):

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, Students; personal and OSU use permitted.

Adobe Reader allows you to view and print Portable Document Format (PDF) files with the original graphics and layout intact. It is available to faculty, staff and students for use on campus and on home computers. This version now also includes Document Rights which provides features when you open a PDF document with additional usage rights. These features include Save Document, Advanced Form features, Comments, and Digital Signatures. You may order the software from the Adobe website.

 Apple App Developer Kit (Standard and Enterprise):

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff; personal and OSU use permitted.

Ohio State has obtained two kits: the first is for designing and distributing Apple Apps for iPhones, iPods, and iPads for internal departmental use under OSU's Enterprise Kit from Apple; the second is a Standard Kit for distribution via the Apple App Store. Kits may be used on OSU-owned machines for faculty and staff only for departmental use. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client (version 3.0):

OSUnet VPN service is designed as a solution for faculty, staff and students to be able to have remote usage to the OSUnet network that is authenticated and secure. This authentication is accomplished by a "client" VPN program which communicates with a server located at OSU. Available to faculty, staff and students at main and regional campuses and on your home computer. It is for university-related business only and must be left with your department and removed from your home computer when you leave OSU. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Fetch (version 5.3):

Fetch is a program that enables you to connect to a remote computer to send and retrieve files over the Internet using FTP (file transfer protocol) or Secure file transfer protocol (SFTP). This now includes improved capability with MacOS X 10.5, and allows you to upload files to servers using Copy and Paste commands. In addition, Fetch now is a Universal application and supports PPC and Intel Macs. Available to faculty, staff and students for use at main and regional campuses and on your home computer. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 FileZilla (current version):

FileZilla is a free, open source FTP client that supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), among others. This FTP client does work with OSU Web Hosting. Available to faculty, staff, and students for personal and OSU-business use. You may order the software from the FileZilla download page.

 JMP (version 10):

Supported Versions: 9, 10

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, and Students; Main and Regional campus use permitted; OSU-owned and personal machine use permitted. Use is limited to instruction, academic research, and coursework.

JMP is an interactive software tool designed for statistical visualization and exploratory data analysis. This is available to faculty, staff and students on main campus only. It can be used for classroom instruction, academic research and course work only. Home use is allowed for a holder of the license on campus. The right-to-use license is no charge. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 LANDesk (current version)

Supported Versions: Current release supported; "Mid-year Upgrade Protection" ensures releases stay current.

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff; Main and branch campus usey permitted; OSU-managed machines only (including contractors).

Cost: Based on an FTE model. Obtain quote per below description.

LANDesk Software provides systems management, security management, service management, asset management, and process management solutions to organizations. Available to OSU faculty and staff for use on all OSU-owned machines and any machines that require management by OSU staff. OCIO Site Licensing and OCIO Security, with help from CFAES and other offices at OSU, have partnered to negotiate a three-year contract with LANDesk for departments to purchase a variety of their software from GovConnection. Pricing is based on a per-FTE basis, as calculated by Site Licensing based on departmental Microsoft FTE counts, and all departments receive the same price, regardless of size. Site Licensing recommends the Management Suite and Mid-year Upgrade Protection. A powerful and comprehensive interactive symbolic algebra system used for engineering and mathematical instruction and research. Available to faculty and staff for use on computers on campus or in their homes for university-related business. Available to graduate students who are employed as a teaching or research assistant/associate for use on computers on campus only for university-related business. Software must be returned when leaving OSU. This program comes in a desktop version and a server version. The server version may be used to run Maple in a LAN environment. Maple contains extensive Help after installation. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

NOTE: you can access the Maple Application Center. This site offers a free online resource of technical solutions submitted by Maple users from around the world. When you link to this site, you also have access to the Maple Student Center for course help, Maple Power Tools which are add-on packages and The Maple Reporter which is published semiannually and covers new developments at Waterloo Maple, Inc.

 MATLAB (current version):

There is a Planned Outage for MathWorks Account from Friday, Oct 4th 5:00pm to Sunday, Oct 6th 8:00pm EST. This will affect students attempting to register for or download MATLAB software during this window.

It is also available to faculty, academic staff and students for use on personally owned computers. Student use is limited to use in meeting classroom requirements and courses of study offered by OSU. Commercial use is prohibited. Additional toolboxes may be ordered. Please contact Bryan Zocco of The Mathworks at (508)647-7274, (bzocco@mathworks.com) to inquire about quotations and orders for additional toolboxes. In this case The Mathworks will generate any additional license codes for add-on toolboxes (Child Licenses) for you to combine during installation with your Standard Configuration license codes. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

The MATLAB TAH Install Guide provides details on how to install additional toolbox licenses NOT in the OSU Standard Configuration along with the TAH license for the Standard OSU license configuration. This is a technical computing system used by science, industry and academia. It combines high-precision numeric and symbolic computation with data visualization and programming capabilities. This license was obtained by the College of Math and Physical Sciences. This version is licensed to currently employed faculty and staff. This software may be used on OSU-owned machines or personal machines in support of instruction of academic research. Research laboratories are not eligible unless their primary mission is the direct teaching of students. The software is licensed annually at no charge, currently. The license runs from September to September of each year. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Mathematica Student Edition (Current version):

 MT-Newswatcher (verison 3.4):

Newswatcher enables you to use your Macintosh computer to read and post news articles on network news groups. This is available to faculty, staff and students for main and regional campuses and your home computer. This version runs on MacOS X only. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Oracle Database Software:

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff, and students on OSU-owned computers on Main and Regional campuses only. Not avaiable for non-medical functions at OSUMC.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has purchased a campuswide site license for the following Oracle software modules:

This is available to faculty, staff and students on main and regional campuses for administrative, teaching, research, or community service functions. Commercial use is prohibited. It may not be used on your home computer or for personal use. It is not available for use in the OSU Medical Center for non-medical functions such as patient management and billing. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department or OIT when you leave OSU. You will order software CDs directly from an Oracle MetaLink web site. For authorization to access this site to order CDs you will need OSU's Oracle Customer Support Identifier (CSI). This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 OzTeX (current version):

Supported Versions: Current version.

Eligibilty: Faculty, Staff and Students for use on personal and OSU machines on Main and Regional campuses.

System Requirements (most recent version):

OzTeX is a Macintosh implementation of Donald Knuth's TeX typesetting system. The license was obtained by the Department of Statistics, so the normal Shareware fee has been paid. You may obtain the software by linking to http://www.trevorrow.com/oztex/index.html . Details of changes for recent versions can be found also at the above web site. A users guide is provided with the software. Available to faculty, staff and students for use on computers on campus for university-related business.

 Parallels Desktop for Mac (version 8)

Supported Versions: 7, 8

Eligibilty: Faculty and Staff for use on OSU-owned machines on Main and Regional campuses.

Cost: New users: $36. Upgrades: $34. See below.

System Requirements (most recent version):

Parallels Desktop for Mac is a virtualization solution for the Macintosh, enabling Mac users to run Windows (including Vista and 7) simultaneously with their Mac OS X on any Intel-powered iMac, Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro or Mac Pro Tower. This is available to faculty and staff and for student lab use on main and regional campuses for administrative, teaching, research functions. Commercial use is prohibited. The fee entitles you to upgrades during the subscription year, which rolls over each year on March 30. Upgrades after that subscription year cost $34. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 ReadSpeaker Enterprise:

Supported Versions: Web-based; current version provided by company.

Eligibilty: Faculty and Staff for use on OSU webpages on Main and Regional campuses.

Cost: No cost

Provides end users a link on a web page that when clicked reads the contents of the page, with optional highlighting of text during reading. Users can also download an MP3 of the page. The web developer chooses the region of the page to be read and implements by including a "Listen" link and some JavaScript. Available for use on osu.edu and ohio-state.edu domains and sub-domains only, and only on HTTP pages (not HTTPS). "Listen" links will work in all modern browsers that support Flash and JavaScript. Browsers that do not support Flash will not be able to play back pages with the highlighting effect; however, clicking the "Listen" link in these browsers will display a link to download an MP3 of the page. Instructions for use of this software are available on the Web Accessibility Center's site.

 RealPlayer (current version):

This is obtained directly from the company, RealNetworks, Inc. The Office of the Chief Information Officer does not have a license to distribute this within OSU. You can obtain it directly from RealNetworks, Inc. if you agree to their license agreement. You may obtain the software from the RealPlayer download site.

 RefWorks (current release):

Supported Versions: Web-based; most recent version.

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff and students on Main and Regional campuses.

Cost: No cost

System Requirements (most recent version):

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography. RefWorks is a web-based application and hence is available to users on Windows, Macintosh and Unix, etc. No downloading or installation is needed since you use your web browser to access this application from a server. Write-n-Cite is a feature which allows you to access your references in RefWorks while working within Microsoft Word. RefWorks has been acquired through the efforts of The Ohio State University Libraries in conjunction with other OhioLink member schools. OIT site licensing provides some cost sharing in support of this campuswide license. This application is available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses. To access the RefWorks web-based application, proceed to the OSU Libraries Research Databases web site.

 SciFinder Scholar (current version):

Supported Versions: Web-based; most recent version.

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff, and students on Main and Regional campuses.

Cost: No cost

SciFinder is a web-based application which accesses a server at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in Columbus, Ohio. The application provides easy, natural language searching of the "Chemical Abstracts" database by subject, author and chemical substance. To receive use the software please download the instruction document.  Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition (current version)

Eligibility: Home use by faculty, staff, and students. No use on OSU-owned machines.

System Requirements:

  • Mac with Intel or PowerPC processor
  • 256 MB of memory
  • 150 MB of available disk space
  • Mac with OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Lion)
  • Supports all Apple Mac hardware including iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro and the new MacBook Air

Sophos provides a free antivirus program for Macintosh computers, and is recommended by the OCIO Security Team for home users. OSU has not purchased an enterprise license, so this version may not be installed on OSU-owned or managed machines. For OSU-owned or managed machines, please see our System Center Endpoint Protection link. You may download the software from the Sophos website.

 SPSS Statistics (version 21) (formerly PASW):

Supported Versions: 19, 20, 21

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff and students on Main and Regional campuses, for use on personally- or OSU-owned machines.

Cost: Faculty and staff: $32 per installation; students: no charge.

System Requirements (current version):

A comprehensive statistical analysis package. Available to faculty and staff for use on the main and regional campuses and at home for university-related business for teaching and academic research. Available to students for use on their personally-owned computer. This is a Teaching and Research license.

SPSS for faculty/staff and for campus lab use now includes the Base, Regression, Advanced Statistics, Categories, Custom Tables, Forecasting, and Missing Values Analysis modules.

The license is purchased annually. Licenses purchased after May 1, 2013, may be upgraded at no additional charge.

SPSS for student home/laptop use includes PASW Statistics, Regression, Advanced Statistics, Custom Tables, and Tables Original modules, and is available to students at no charge.

System Requirements (current version):

STATA is an environment for manipulating and analyzing data using statistical and graphical methods. It is an integrated package, not a collection of separate modules. This is available as part of the StataCorp Grad Plan, originally administered by the Statistics dept. OCIO is now facilitating distribution at their request. Available to faculty, staff, and students on main and regional campuses and on home computers. If you purchase with your own funds you own the software license. Licenses purchased with OSU funds remain with OSU. To purchase, call 800-782-8272 or go to the StataCorp site.

The software is ordered either as a download from STATA or as media shipped directly to you. It is no longer picked up at the Buckeye Bar on campus (this is due to a distribution change by STATA).

 StuffIt Expander:

Supported Versions: Current version supplied by company

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff and students on Main and Regional campuses, for use on personally- or OSU-owned machines.

Cost: Varies; see link below

System Requirements (current version):

StuffIt Expander provides access to many file formats downloaded from the Internet, sent via email or delivered to you on hard copy media from Mac, PC or Unix machines. It is available to all faculty, staff and students. This is freeware. A link is provided on the electronic download pages to aid in downloading convenience for OSU users who want to obtain the latest version. This software may be obtained from SmithMicro.

 System Center Endpoint Protection for Macintosh:

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff on Main and Regional campuses, for use on OSU-owned machines.

Cost: No charge

System Requirements (current version): OS X 10.6 or 10.7

System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP, formerly Forefront) is an anit-virus, anti-malware product designed to protect your Mac and keep it safe. This version of SCEP will integrate with SCCM SP1 for management of Mac systems. This software is available to Faculty and Staff on OSU's main and regional campuses on OSU-owned and -managed machines at no charge as part of our Microsoft Campus Agreement. Home users should use the Sophos product listed above. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 TN3270 X (version 3.2.4):

Supported Versions: 3.2.4

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff and students on Main and Regional campuses, for use on personally- or OSU-owned machines.

Cost: No charge

System Requirements (current version):

TN3270 allows a Macintosh computer with a TCP/IP network connection to negotiate a telnet session emulating an IBM 3270 terminal. Features of this release include support for Kerberos 4 and Kerberos 5 authentication and encryption and support for negotiated SSL using the telnet Start TLS option. It is available to all faculty, staff and students. OCIO has obtained permission from the author at Brown University to distribute this software to OSU. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 TurningPoint (current version)

Supported Versions: Current version provided by company.

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff and students on Main and Regional campuses, for use on personally- or OSU-owned machines.

Cost: No cost.

System Requirements (current version):

TurningPoint is software that OSU instructors and staff can use to add interactive polling/quizzing slides to a PowerPoint presentation. They can make a request to have OIT Classroom Services install the software in a Classroom Pool room's lectern computer by sending an e-mail to clickers@osu.edu. Please specify that you want the antenna installed on the Mac computer if you are creating the slides with "TurningPoint for Mac". You can not do polling on the Windows version of TurningPoint with slides created with the Mac version and vice versa. This software is available from Turning Technologies.

System Requirements (current version):

A Digital Music Repository software package offered by the Ohio State University Music and Dance Library. It is a tool to assist instructors in demonstrating musical concepts by annotating musical scores and audio files and sharing them with students. It allows students to study these compositions outside of the classroom at most web-enabled personal computers. This is all done while unobtrusively enforcing the rights of the works' copyright holders based on the students' course enrollment.Available to faculty, staff, and students. This software may be requested from the OSU Library's Variations User Guide.

 VMWare:

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff on Main and Regional campuses, for use on OSU-owned machines.

Once reviewed by an OARnet Client Service Representative, your order will be forwarded to VMware representatives, who then will provide you with download instructions and a product key.
