New Year, New Features in the Ohio State App

The app that lets you “put campus in your pocket” is always improving. Our developers want to be sure the app reflects the student experience at The Ohio State University, while also adapting to new mobile devices in the market. To get 2016 off to a great start, our mobile developers are making three major changes to the Ohio State app:

  1. Improved Bus Accuracy
Based on student feedback and bus route field studies, our mobile app developers realized a 30-second refresh rate for bus tracking just wasn’t fast enough (especially during blistering cold weather conditions!) Now Ohio State app users will experience a significantly faster 10-second refresh rate, making bus locations and travel times much more accurate.
  2. NEW Dining Feature (Coming Soon!)
Popping up on the home screen soon, the new dining widget will show you where to grab grub and more. Utilizing the functionality of the Student Life dining site, users will be able to filter their food choices based on dietary needs and preferences.
  3. Apple Watch Support
If reaching into your pocket to check your schedule is too much of a hassle, we have great news! The Ohio State app will soon support an Apple Watch complication (like a watch-face widget) that will display your class schedule right on your wrist. Tapping on the complication will pull up more information, including a map with walking directions to classroom buildings.

“We’re really excited to release these updates,” said Chris Fish, Mobile and Web Development Specialist. “Students provided helpful feedback on the bus feature, and we know that dining is a major part of campus life.”

Support for the Apple Watch will be the Ohio State app’s first endeavor into the realm of wearable technology, and if students want to see more features for smart watches, the OCIO will listen. The mobile developers are constantly looking for ways to improve the app in order to keep up with the changing student experience.
