The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) offers the following Windows site licensed software and public domain programs to members of The Ohio State University community. Please refer to the Software Life-cycle Management Guidelines for general policy guidelines and an explanation of certain restrictions that may apply to usage on regional campuses.

This is a complete directory of all software available from or distributed by OCIO. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

Adobe Professional:

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff departmental use via IT Service Desk; Student and fac/staff personal use available via WiredOut.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro software lets you deliver highly professional PDF communications. Create and edit PDF files with rich media included, share information more securely, and gather team feedback more efficiently.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has reached an agreement with Adobe to provide unlimited use of the Acrobat Professional product on all OSU campuses for faculty and staff. This Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) permits a broad installation of the software, and allows us to deepen our relationship with Adobe. Available to faculty, staff, and GRA/GTA's, this software may be used on OSU-owned machines, or on home machines for University business. Available on main and regional campuses and all extension offices.

 Adobe Contract License Program:

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff departmental use via CLP (see below); Student and fac/staff personal use available via WiredOut.

Ohio State University has entered into a Contract License Program (CLP) with Adobe. This contract provides for discounts up to 65% off of educational boxed product. This software may be obtained at WiredOut, in the Central Classrooms building. Personal use for faculty, staff, and students may be obtained at WiredOut, also at significant discount. Site License Coordinators may obtain installation codes for departmental use. SLSC's may request the codes for all Adobe products through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Adobe Reader (current version):

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, Students; personal and OSU use permitted.

  • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later/XP/Vista/7.
  • 128 MB RAM, 90 MB hard disk space.

Adobe Reader allows you to view and print Portable Document Format (PDF) files with the original graphics and layout intact. It is available to faculty, staff and students for use on campus and on home computers. This version now also includes Document Rights which provides features when you open a PDF document with additional usage rights. These features include Save Document, Advanced Form features, Comments, and Digital Signatures. You may order the software from the Adobe website.

This is a geographic information system (GIS) product from Environmental Systems Research Institute. ArcGIS offers advanced modeling, mapping and analysis capabilities for the desktop. ArcGIS Desktop runs on Windows 2000/XP platforms. ArcGIS incorporates the capabilities of Arc/View and Arc/Info and replaces those products. The license is administered by the Center for Mapping. The ArcGIS Windows version is available by download and you can arrange for CD media from the CfM. For more information about this package please follow the ESRI link.

ArcIMS provides the foundation for distributing high-end geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping services via the Internet. ArcIMS software enables users to integrate local data sources with Internet data sources for display, query, and analysis in an easy-to-use Web browser. The license is administered by the Center for Mapping. For more information about this package please follow the ESRI link. The ArcIMS Windows version is available by download and you can arrange for CD media from the CfM.

 ArcPad (current version) Windows:

ESRI's ArcPad software is mobile mapping and geographic information system (GIS) technology. ArcPad provides database access, mapping, GIS, and global positioning system (GPS) integration to users out in the field via handheld and mobile devices. Data collection with ArcPad is fast, easy, and significantly improved with immediate data validation and availability. The license is administered by the Center for Mapping.  ArcSDE (current version) Windows 2000/XP:

ArcSDE is a gateway that facilitates managing spatial data in database management systems. ArcSDE allows you to manage geographic information in one of the four commercial databases: IBM DB2, IBM Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle, as well as being able to serve ESRI's file-based data with ArcSDE for Coverages. The license is administered by the Center for Mapping. For more information about this package please follow the ESRI link. The ArcSDE Windows version is available by download.

This software is available to faculty and staff for use on main and regional campuses (including on campus labs). Home use is not allowed. It may be used solely for the purposes of educational instruction, administration, or facilities management and not for any commercial or for profit purposes at OSU. When you are no longer affiliated with OSU you must return the software to your department or OCIO. You can purchase an annual subscription to use the AutoDesk software for $91. 3ds Max is a separate $91 purchase, also on annual description. You are not required to buy Autodesk to use 3ds Max, or 3ds Max to use Autodesk. At this time, no cloud services are offered as part of this suite. The subscription year expires on August 31 of each year. The software is available for loan out at the Buckeye Bar in Thompson Library. Available on mixed media, DVDROM and CDROM, only. Cloud Services are not currently included, due to licensing restrictions.

 BadCopy Pro (version 4.10) Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista/7:

BadCopy Pro is a data recovery tool for floppy disk, CD-ROM, CD-R/W, digital media and other storage media, including hard drives. It can recover corrupted or lost data from damaged, unreadable or defective disks. Available to faculty and staff for on-campus machines only. No home use is allowed. This is for use for university business only. When you are no longer affiliated with OSU you must return the software to your department or OCIO. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client (version 3.0) Windows:

Supported Versions: 3.0

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, and Students; Main and regional use permitted; OSU-owned and personal machines permitted.

Cost: No cost

OSUnet VPN service is designed as a solution for faculty, staff and students to be able to have remote usage to the OSUnet network that is authenticated and secure. This authentication is accomplished by a "client" VPN program which communicates with a server located at OSU. Available to faculty, staff and students at main and regional campuses and on your home computer. It is for university-related business only and must be left with your department and removed from your home computer when you leave OSU. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 FileZilla (current version): Windows XP/Vista/7:

Supported Versions: Current version provided by company.

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, and Students; Main and regional use permitted; OSU-owned and personal machines permitted.

FileZilla is a free, open source FTP client. It provides a reliable way to maintain web pages and perform file transfers on the Internet. It supports FTP, SFTP, and FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS). Available to faculty, staff and students for main and regional campus use and home use. You may order the software from the FileZilla download page.

 JMP (version 10) for Windows XP/Vista/7/8:

Supported Versions: 9, 10

Eligibility: Faculty, Staff, and Students; Main and Regional campuses; OSU-owned and personal machine use permitted. Use is limited to instruction, academic research, and coursework.

Cost: No cost

System Requirements:

  • Pentium 4 PC or higher.
  • Windows XP (SP2), Vista (Home Basic Edition not supported). 7/8 (Starter and Home Basic Editions not supported).
  • 1 GB of RAM, 500 MB free disk space.
  • True (24 bit+) color with resolution at 1024 X 768 or greater.

JMP is an interactive software tool designed for statistical visualization and exploratory data analysis. This is available to faculty, staff and students located on main campus only. It can be used for classroom instruction, academic research and course work only. Home use is allowed for a holder of the license on campus. The right-to-use license is no charge. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 LANDesk (current version)

Supported Versions: Current release supported; "Mid-year Upgrade Protection" ensures releases stay current.

Eligibility: Faculty/Staff; Main and branch campus usey permitted; OSU-managed machines only (including contractors).

Cost: Based on an FTE model. Obtain quote per below description.

LANDesk Software provides systems management, security management, service management, asset management, and process management solutions to organizations. Available to OSU faculty and staff for use on all OSU-owned machines and any machines that require management by OSU staff. OCIO Site Licensing and OCIO Security, with help from CFAES and other offices at OSU, have partnered to negotiate a three-year contract with LANDesk for departments to purchase a variety of their software from GovConnection. Pricing is based on a per-FTE basis, as calculated by Site Licensing based on departmental Microsoft FTE counts, and all departments receive the same price, regardless of size. Site Licensing recommends the Management Suite and Mid-year Upgrade Protection.   • Graphics adapter capable of 1024 x 768 resolution or better.

A powerful and comprehensive interactive symbolic algebra system used for engineering and mathematical instruction and research. Available to faculty and staff for use on campus or in their homes for university-related business. Available to students who are employed as a teaching or research assistant/associate for use on computers on campus only for university-related business. Software must be returned when leaving OSU. This program comes in a desktop version and a server version. The server version may be used to run Maple in a LAN environment. Maple contains extensive Help documentation after installation. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

Additionally, you can access the Maple Application Center. This site offers a free online resource of technical solutions submitted by Maple users from around the world. When you link to this site, you also have access to the Maple Student Center for course help, Maple Power Tools which are add-on packages and The Maple Reporter which is published semiannually and covers new developments at Waterloo Maple, Inc.

 MATLAB (current version)

There is a Planned Outage for MathWorks Account from Friday, Oct 4th 5:00pm to Sunday, Oct 6th 8:00pm EST. This will affect students attempting to register for or download MATLAB software during this window.

This is a technical computing system used by science, industry and academia. It combines high-precision numeric and symbolic computation with data visualization and programming capabilities. This license was obtained by the College of Math and Physical Sciences. This version is licensed to currently employed faculty and staff. This software may be used on OSU-owned machines or personal machines in support of instruction of academic research. Research laboratories are not eligible unless their primary mission is the direct teaching of students. The software is licensed annually at no charge, currently. The license runs from September to September of each year. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Mathematica Student Version 8:

Supported Versions: 7, 7.01, 8

Eligibilty: Students on Main and Regional campuses. No use on OSU-owned machines.

Cost: No cost

 Microsoft Security Essentials

Supported Versions: Current version only

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff and students on personally-owned machines only. No OSU-use is permitted.

An anti-malware (anti-virus and anti-spyware) product available to faculty, staff, and students for use on personally-owned machines (no institutional [OSU] use is permitted; Forefront is the enterprise solution for all OSU-owned machines). You may obtain the software from the Microsoft download pages.

  Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection (formerly Forefront):

Supported Versions: Forefront for Endpoint Protection (FEP); System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP)

Eligibilty: Faculty and Staff on OSU-owned machines on Main and Regional campuses.

System Requirements (most recent version):

  • Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7. Systems should meet minimum system requirements for their operating system.
  • SVGA monitor.

An anti-malware (anti-virus and anti-spyware) product available to faculty and regular staff for use on campus and in student labs. There is a client only solution (for unmanaged deployments and stand-alone installations) and an enterprise-level solution (for managed deployments or departmental distribution). This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 MINITAB (release 16) Windows XP/Vista/7:

Supported Versions: 16

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff on OSU's Main and Regional campuses only.

System Requirements (most recent version):

A statistical analysis software package available to faculty and regular staff for use on campus and in student labs, on OSU owned machines for university-related business only. This is a right-to-use copy only that must be returned to OCIO or left with your department when you leave OSU. Please note that MINITAB no longer uses an authorization code in release 16. It uses a concurrent licensing model and clients "check out" licenses from a license server. Instructions on setting up your copy to access the license server are contained in the install tip sheet when you get your copy of the software. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 NVivo (version 10) Windows XP/Vista/7:

Supported Versions: 10

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff on OSU's Main and Regional campuses only.

Cost: $42/copy installed; renewed each July

System Requirements (most recent version):

NVivo is a package used in Qualitative Data Analysis. This tool allows fine-detail analysis, fluid exploration and interpretation, integrating the processes of interpretation and questioning. NVivio has many ways of recording the links between data and ideas that go beyond coding. This is available to faculty and staff on the main and regional campuses and in student labs. Home use is allowed for OSU business purposes only. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department and deleted from your home computer when you leave OSU. The cost is $42 for the license. The purchase year runs from July 1 - July 1 of each year, and each copy installed requires the fee. Existing users may upgrade to this version at no charge. Existing users must also renew before July 1 of each year to continue to receive current license codes. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 Oracle Database Software:

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff, and students on OSU-owned computers on Main and Regional campuses only. Not avaiable for non-medical functions at OSUMC.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has purchased a campuswide site license for the following Oracle software modules:

This is available to faculty, staff and students on main and regional campuses for administrative, teaching, research, or community service functions. Commercial use is prohibited. It may not be used on your home computer or for personal use. It is not available for use in the OSU Medical Center for non-medical functions such as patient management and billing. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department or OCIO when you leave OSU. You will order software CDs directly from an Oracle MetaLink web site. For authorization to access this site to order CDs you will need OSU's Oracle Customer Support Identifier (CSI). A file containing this number and additional instructions, the Oracle CSI file, may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

 PowerTerm Pro Enterprise (version 9.2) Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7:

Supported Versions: 9.2

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff on personally- and OSU-owned machiens on Main and Regional campuses only.

Cost: No cost

System Requirements (most recent version):

This is a terminal emulator. It supports IBM 3270 emulation and other terminals such as Digital, Wyse, Data General and others. Host support includes the IBM mainframe, AS/400, Unix and other. This product is able to interact with document imaging systems through the Dynamic Data Exchange protocol. It is also able to establish a secure session with SSH and SSL protocols and it supports secure FTP. Available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses and for use on your home computer. It is available to you while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department and deleted from your home computer when you leave OSU.

 PuTTY (current version):

Supported Versions: Current version provided by community

Eligibilty: Faculty, staff and students on OSU- and personally-owned machines on Main and Regional campuses. University and personal use permitted.

System Requirements (most recent version):

This provides users with a secure terminal connection over untrusted networks. The PuTTY client replaces other insecure terminal applications such as TELNET and FTP. Available to faculty, staff, and students for use on computers on campus or at home for university-related business or leisure. Regional campuses are included. Full license terms are packaged with the product. This is available via electronic download only. You may obtain the software from the PuTTY download page.

 Read and Write (version 10) Windows XP/Vista/7/8:

Supported Versions: 10

Eligibilty: Students, faculty and staff on OSU's Main and Regional campuses only. Installation available on OSU-owned and personally-owned machines.

Cost: No cost

  • Internet connection for certain features PDF Aloud requires Adobe Reader 9 or above or Acrobat Version 8 or above

Read and Write is a support program to help people with reading and writing difficulties when using their computer. It can use a sound card to read aloud and help you construct words using word prediction. This software was obtained by the Office for Disability Services and is distributed by OCIO at their request. Available to faculty and staff and students on OSU-owned and personally-owned machines.

 ReadSpeaker Enterprise:

Supported Versions: Web-based; current version provided by company.

Provides end users a link on a web page that when clicked reads the contents of the page, with optional highlighting of text during reading. Users can also download an MP3 of the page. The web developer chooses the region of the page to be read and implements by including a "Listen" link and some JavaScript. Available for use on osu.edu and ohio-state.edu domains and sub-domains only, and only on HTTP pages (not HTTPS). "Listen" links will work in all modern browsers that support Flash and JavaScript. Browsers that do not support Flash will not be able to play back pages with the highlighting effect; however, clicking the "Listen" link in these browsers will display a link to download an MP3 of the page. RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create their own personal database by importing references from text files or online databases. They can use these references in writing their papers and automatically format the paper and the bibliography. RefWorks is a web-based application and hence is available to users on Windows, Macintosh and Unix, etc. No downloading or installation is needed since you use your web browser to access this application from a server. Write-n-Cite is a feature which allows you to access your references in RefWorks while working within Microsoft Word. RefWorks has been acquired through the efforts of The Ohio State University Libraries in conjunction with other OhioLink member schools. This application is available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses. The product options contained in this are as described for SAS for Windows workstations, EXCEPT for Enterprise Miner and Genetics which are not on the server platform. The server version is available to faculty and staff for use on OSU owned machines located on campus for academic instruction, research and administrative use OR for administrative use and must be returned when you leave OSU. You must state your intended use (Administrative or Teaching/Research) when you order the software. SAS Windows Server is available on a per-processor basis. A CPU processor is a single integrated circuit on the motherboard with one or more cores. So, a dual core CPU counts as one CPU. This software is renewable annually each Septemberfor a fee. You must choose between a Teaching and Research or Administrative license.

SciFinder is a web-based application which accesses a server at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in Columbus, Ohio. The application provides easy, natural language searching of the "Chemical Abstracts" database by subject, author and chemical substance.  Secunia Corporate Software Inspector (CSI) 5.0

The Secunia CSI is an authenticated patch scanner, designed to be non-intrusive and easy on the hosts and network being scanned, thus causing a minimal impact while pinpointing vulnerable programs across your network. The product is in two parts: a central management dashboard that is an automated patch manager and security scanner that integrates with Microsoft WSUS & SCCM for easy deployment of security updates and adheres to Patch Management best practices; and an agent that runs on client machines for deeper information about those machines. Agentless scanning is also possible. Secunia agents are small and have little (if any) impact on performance, and they report software inventories as well as security vulnerabilities and allowing patching. Secunia CSI agents may be installed on any machine managed by the University, including personally-owned machines; the PSI (see below) should be installed on unmanaged machines not owned by the University, however. Thanks to OCIO Security and the OSU Medical Center, there is no cost for the use of this softare through November 2015. Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) (current version)

The Secunia PSI is patch scanner, designed to scan personal computers for vulnerabilities caused by unpatched software. The PSI may be installed on any OSU Faculty, Staff or Student machine, and you may link the copy of Secunia PSI that you download from Secunia with the university's main account by entering "buckeyes" under the Link ID under "Configuration" and "Integrate with Secunia CSI" on the left sidebar of the PSI program.

 SigmaPlot (version 12) Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7:

SigmaPlot is a technical graphing program. It is specifically designed to aid in documenting and publishing research, specializing in the graphical presentation of data. This is available to faculty and staff. It may be used on OSU and personally owned PCs for research, education and OSU administrative use. It is available to the main and regional campuses. This is a right-to-use license that must be returned when you leave OSU. New users must purchase an annual subscription for use. The annual subscription runs from November 1 to November 1. If you have purchased SigmaPlot since September 1 of the year you will be covered for the year. Each copy for new users requires the fee. To continue use beyond November of each year you must renew your subscription to obtain updated license codes. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

SpinRite (version 6):

This software is used for hard drive disk care, maintenance and data recovery. It is available to faculty and staff; however, the company strongly recommends use only by trained IT support staff. This is a right-to-use license that must be returned when you leave OSU. It is for use on OSU main and regional campuses, on OSU-owned equipment only. This software may be requested through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.

SPSS Statistics (version 21; formerly PASW)/Amos 21 Windows XP/Vista/7:

Eligibilty: Faculty and staff and students on Main and Regional campuses, for use on personally- or OSU-owned machines. Amos is not available for home use or student use.

Cost: Faculty and staff: $32 per installation (Amos is charged separately, also $32)*; students: no charge for SPSS, Amos not available.

A comprehensive statistical analysis package. Available to faculty and staff for use on the main and regional campuses and at home for university-related business, including teaching and academic research. Available to students for use on their personally-owned computer. This is a Teaching and Research license.

SPSS Windows for faculty/staff and for campus lab use includes the Statistics Base, Regression, Advanced Statistics, Categories, Conjoint, Exact Tests, Custom Tables, Tables Original, Forecasting, Trends Original, Missing Value Analysis. The license also includes Amos (Analysis of MOment Structures) which implements the general approach to data analysis known as structural equation modeling. The license is purchased annually. Licenses purchased after May 1, 2013, may be upgraded at no additional charge.

STATA is an environment for manipulating and analyzing data using statistical and graphical methods. It is an integrated package, not a collection of separate modules. This is available as part of the StataCorp Grad Plan. Available to faculty, staff, and students on main and regional campuses and on home computers. If you purchase with your own funds you own the software license. Licenses purchased with OSU funds remain with OSU. To purchase, call 800-782-8272 or go to the StataCorp site.

The software is ordered either as a download from STATA or as media shipped directly to you. It is no longer picked up at the Buckeye Bar on campus (this is due to a distribution change by STATA).

TextPad is a powerful, general purpose editor for plain text files. It has many features for the power user. It includes these features: edit very large files (up to the limits of virtual memory), a spelling checker, unlimited undo/redo capability, block mode, sorting using up to 3 keys and a power search/replace engine using Unix-style regular expressions. Available to faculty and staff for main and regional campuses and home computers. It can be used only for OSU business purposes. It is for use while you are affiliated with OSU and must be left with your department and removed from your home computer when leaving OSU. TurningPoint 2008 is software that OSU instructors and staff can use to add interactive polling/quizzing slides to a PowerPoint presentation. They can make a request to have OCIO Classroom Services install the software in a Classroom Pool room's lectern computer (and the required USB antenna) by sending an e-mail to clickers@osu.edu. The download comes with a limited license code that allows these copies to work with up to 5 clickers for testing. Also, bundled with the Windows version is TurningPoint AnyWhere. TurningPoint AnyWhere is an audience response system that allows presenters to poll an audience from any PC application and immediately display the results. This allows for instantaneous feedback for the presenter and helps keep the audience engaged by displaying their input. Available to faculty, staff and students for use on main and regional campuses and home computers. This software is for use for university-related business. This software is available from Turning Technologies.

A Digital Music Repository software package offered by the Ohio State University Music and Dance Library. It is a tool to assist instructors in demonstrating musical concepts by annotating musical scores and audio files and sharing them with students. It allows students to study these compositions outside of the classroom at most web-enabled personal computers. This is all done while unobtrusively enforcing the rights of the works' copyright holders based on the students' course enrollment. Available to faculty, staff, and students. This software may be requested from the OSU Library's Variations User Guide.

X-Win32 is a X Windows server which runs on the PC platform. X Windows provides for a Graphical User Interface for Unix systems. X-Win32 also integrates support for OpenGL-based X Windows applications. It also provides an integrated SSH connection to Unix systems and a new "LIVE" session mode which allows for suspending and resuming sessions. Available to faculty, staff and students on the main and regional campuses and on your home computer. This software is for use only for university-related business. It is for use while you are affiliated with OSU and it must be left with your department and/or removed from your home computer when leaving OSU.

FastX is a simple PC X server solution. FastX allows you to connect over the Internet and work with even the most demanding remote hosted Linux and Unix applications at LAN speed. FastX sessions are persistent (you can reconnect after a network interruption) and secure.

Both xWin32 and FastX software are available by requesting xWin32 through the Order Services link of OCIO Self Service.
